The story tells of Geppetto’s son Pinocchio, a wooden puppet who is desperate to become a real boy. On his journey of discovery, he encounters a cat and a fox (who are definitely crooks), the Blue Fairy (who operates from a Wishing Star), Jiminy Cricket (who becomes Pinocchio’s conscience figure), as well as many other weird and wacky characters. It’s a cautionary tale of a child’s journey and a father’s unconditional love.
Pinocchio will star Tobie Cronjé – one of South Africa’s best known actors and certainly the most loved of all the panto stars – in the role of Gepetto Spoletto, with multi-faceted and talented performer André Schwartz – who has fourteen successful CDs as a recording artist and returns to panto for the first time at Joburg Theatre since 2006 – as Il Fortunato, the Fox. Also featured in the all-star cast of Pinocchio will be Chi Mhende – best known for her role as Wandile on SABC’s soapie drama Generations – as Pussy Galore, the Cat, and – in a return to panto tradition of the casting of ‘principal boy’ – the title role of Pinocchio will be played by Kanyi Nokwe, a member of the legendary South African Nokwe family and a highly successful ‘triple-threat’ performer.
