THE 8TH ANNUAL JOBURG CHORAL FESTIVAL RETURNS TO THE ICONIC JOBURG THEATRE
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – The City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Arts, Culture and Heritage Directorate proudly announces the 8th Annual Joburg Choral Festival, taking place on Sunday, 11 May 2025, at the prestigious Joburg Theatre. This celebration of voices, culture, and choral excellence promises to be a landmark event in Johannesburg’s cultural calendar.
The Joburg Choral programme is part of the City of Johannesburg’s Mass Participation Programme, designed to foster artistic excellence and community engagement through choral music. The festival will feature Local, Provincial, and National choirs categorized as standard and large ensembles, alongside solo performers showcasing exceptional vocal talent. Audiences can expect performances of Western pieces, African compositions, and traditional songs, all enhanced by full orchestral accompaniment. Professional music scores will be provided for all prescribed songs, ensuring consistent quality across performances.
In preparation for the main festival, a series of developmental activities are scheduled throughout the coming months. These include workshops to enhance performance techniques and choral excellence, as well as provincial and national mini-festivals serving as auditions for the main event. A formal registration and audition process will ensure artistic quality across all performances. All participating choirs and soloists will receive financial remuneration for their contributions, encouraging increased local participation while maintaining high standards of performance quality.
This rigorous preparation process ensures audiences will experience performances of exceptional artistic quality, helping the festival grow its audience beyond the boundaries of Johannesburg.
The festival finale will feature remarkable solo and ensemble performances, including a special quartet performance by distinguished soloists with accompaniment. A mass choir showcase will bring together all participating ensembles with impressive orchestral accompaniment throughout the performances, creating a powerful musical experience that celebrates diverse choral traditions.
