“Dirty Thirty”
Too old to be a child and young enough to believe the world is your oyster. 2024 marked South African’s entry into the dauting and relentless adulting phase. Emerging from apartheid as a unique people with the spirit of Ubuntu and possessing the world’s most progressive constitution, South Africa had a magical start. Yet, 30 years later, adulting is dealing with us.
Space.com invites playmakers to submit proposals to be part of the “Dirty Thirty” program-stories of what got us here and where we go from here.
About Space.com
Located at the Joburg Theatre, Space.com is a 110-seater black box theatre dedicated to developing emerging theatre voices. It has become a platform for debut performances, fostering creativity and innovation with Johannesburg’s theatre scene. The space encourages theatre practitioners to explore new ideas, develop works, and stage productions that challenge and inspire.
Program Focus
Selected productions should align with the 2024 – 2025 theme, exploring South Africa’s Journey into its thirties. The program welcomes diverse performances, including:
• Theatre plays
• Physical theatre
• Musical theatre
• Children’s theatre
There are no restrictions on the nature or form of the performing arts presented.
Development Process
Space.com will work closely with producers, nurturing their skills as writers and directors to help them discover their unique voices. The 2024/25 theatre program involves intensive collaboration with mentors, dramaturges, and experienced theatre makers. Productions will be developed and staged between May and June 2025 at Space.com.
Application Process
1. Submit a Play Proposal and Application:
Interested playwrights and theatre makers should complete the formal Joburg Theatre application form. This is available via email at ycd@joburgtheatre.com or through the link below: [DIRTY THIRTY APPLICATION FORM]
2. Shortlisting:
Shortlisted plays will be invited to present a 10-minute version of their play, along with the director’s treatment and vision for the production on 31 January 2025
3. Production Development:
Producers will collaborate with the Joburg Theatre team to refine their final productions. Productions will:
• Be formally scheduled for the 2024-2025 programming.
• Be marketed on the Joburg Theatre website and social media.
• Open for sale on the Joburg Theatre website and other platforms.
Terms and Conditions
• Applications must use the formal Joburg Theatre application form.
• Revenue sharing:
o 70% to the producer.
o 20% to Joburg Theatre.
o 10% allocated for audience development.
o VAT and ticket management costs (R9.00 per printed ticket) are deducted prior to revenue sharing.
• Space.com provides:
o Waived costs for rehearsal space, performance venue, and technical support.
o A stage manager and technical support for lighting, sound, and audio-visual needs.
• Producers are responsible for:
o Marketing and promoting their productions.
o Conducting a workshop during the production week.
• Productions are allocated one week, including:
o Two movie-in days.
o Rehearsal in the theatre.
o Five performance days (morning, afternoon, or evening slots).
• Eligible producers must reside in or be from Johannesburg.
• Final production approval is at the discretion of Joburg Theatre.
• Proposals must be submitted to ycd@joburgtheatre.com by 20 January 2025. Late applications will not be considered.
• Shortlisted performances for 31 January 2025.
