EDGES – a Musical Song Cycle
The Oakfields College Faculty of Dance and Musical Theatre presents the musical song-cycle, EDGES – created by the award winning duo Pasek and Paul.
The Oakfields College Faculty of Dance and Musical Theatre’s annual production has become a highlight in many theatre goers’ diaries. This year promises to be no different as they present the musical song-cycle EDGES at the Joburg Fringe Theatre from the 17 – 25 November.
EDGES is a contemporary, coming-of-age musical that explores the trials and tribulations of young people moving into adulthood while navigating issues such as individual identity, complicated relationships, societal expectations and unrequited love. This series of musical vignettes provides a voyeuristic ‘slice of life’ peek into the lives of numerous characters as they dissect and assess various aspects of their lives ranging from Facebook addictions to skirting around the word ‘love’ in a new relationship.
The creators of EDGES, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, are an American song-writing duo whose original songs have been featured on NBC’s series SMASH, and most recently in the film LA LA LAND, (for which they won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song). Most notably, of course, is their work on the original musical DEAR EVAN HANSEN which earned them the Tony Award for Best Original Score. EDGES marked the duo’s debut as songwriters when they were 19-year-old undergraduates in musical theatre and has since been performed in hundreds of productions worldwide, including South Korea, Australia, China, the Philippines, Denmark and more.
EDGES will be directed by local actress and head of the Oakfields College Faculty of Dance and Musical Theatre, Jackie Rens. Supporting her as assistant director and choreographer is the multi-talented Weslee Swain Lauder whose work on the musical SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER at the State Theatre earned him a Naledi award nomination for best original choreography. Musical director is Dawid Boverhoff who won this year’s Naledi Award for Best Score / Arrangement / Adaptation for the production ALTYD IN MY DROME which debuted at the Pieter Toerien Studio Theatre.
This production will also feature special guest appearances by two highly acclaimed and popular public figures. The names of these stars will be made public shortly, so keep an eye on the Oakfields College Faculty of Dance and Musical Theatre’s Facebook page for this exciting announcement!
Over the past five years, the Oakfields College Faculty of Dance and Musical Theatre has established a solid reputation for setting the barre when it comes to quality student productions. Given the exquisite material created by Pasek and Paul, the experience of the creative team and the huge talent of the cast of 25 student performers, this production of EDGES is sure to be yet another Oakfields College success taking the audience on an emotional journey of mostly poignant, sometimes sombre and often hilarious moments.
EDGES will run from 17 to 25 November 2017.
Please note that due to the use of occasional strong language and contentious subject matter, some of the material may not be suitable for children under the age of 13.
Tickets cost R75 per person. Students and scholars pay only R65 per person.

MORE ABOUT OAKFIELDS COLLEGE
After a decade of successfully providing tertiary education in the creative arts, Oakfields College has established a dance and musical theatre faculty; a faculty that is already able to boast some exceptional talent.
With the academic approach now employed by the majority of South African tertiary institutions, a distinct necessity arose for an alternate performing arts institution that was sensitive to the highly specialised requirements of the performing arts and focussed on skills-based training within a supportive, creative environment. In response to the demand for such an institution, the Oakfields College Faculty of Dance and Musical Theatre was born.
The Oakfields College Faculty of Dance and Musical Theatre lecturers are practising professionals in their specialised fields with hands-on experience and are familiar with the current trends and demands of the performing arts industry. These lecturers have effectively trained a number of performing arts students who have subsequently forged highly successful and lucrative careers in the entertainment industry and have often dominated the stages in South African theatre as well as in all related spheres within the profession; including television, film, radio and corporate entertainment.
The course covers a multitude of disciplines including singing, dancing, acting, choreography and directing. It aims to cultivate a new generation of versatile professionals who not only demonstrate an academic understanding of the performing arts but who also display an exceptional level of cultivated talent, superior skills, immaculate work ethic and professionalism.
Due to the highly specialised nature of the course, student numbers are limited and acceptance into the programme is dependent on an audition. For further details regarding the auditions for the 2018 intake, please e-mail email@example.com
