This adaptation of Yaël Farber’s A Woman in Waiting reimagines the deeply personal and political narrative to focus on Black femme fragility and the reclamation of softness. With four performers sharing the stage, the production expands the original one-woman format into an ensemble piece that intertwines collective and individual experiences. The adaptation allows Black femmes to confront the inherited and lived traumas that stem from systemic oppression. The story follows Lindelwa, as she yearns for her mother as she experiences childhood in her grandmother’s home and the pain of disillusionment that comes with witnessing your parents be victims of oppression. By revisiting the stories of our mothers and grandmothers, the adaptation honours the pain and sacrifices of previous generations while envisioning a liberated future generations of black femmes where they can exist in the full light of their humanity.
