The DNA Academy together with the Joburg Theatre will hold the 2019 auditions at the Joburg Theatre on Wednesday January 30th 2019.
Although the auditions are open to all, preference will be given to those who have studied or are still studying Drama and Performance Studies at Tertiary institutions.
(Please bring your CV to the auditions)
Those interested in using monologues for their audition should use monologues from published authors. The following authors are highly recommended; Athol Fugard, Zakes Mda, Ntozakhe Shange, (Colored Girls), August Wilson, Tennessee Williams (Street Car Named Desire). Only those from tertiary institutions will use monologues, in addition to the script below.
The DNA Academy was established by Dr. Duma Ndlovu in 2005 to help bridge the gap between those students graduating from drama and performing arts institutions and the arts industry.
The free-of-charge classes take place every Thursday from 9am to 4pm at the Joburg Theatre. Graduates are awarded with a certificate at the end of the year. Students get to participate in various productions staged by the academy. They also get an opportunity to audition for Word Of Mouth and Joburg Theatre Productions. The classes are conducted by Dr. Ndlovu and a host of other notable Directors, Tony Kgoroge, Velile Bangani, Dakalo Kwinda and Tessa Made to name a few.

THE SCRIPT FOR THE AUDITION:
INT.SIPHO’S NEW HOUSE – DAY
LERATO closes the door behind her, looking down in the dumps.
SIPHO looks up with a smile and puts away his newspaper.
SIPHO
(teasing)
… I was beginning to think I would never see you again. Kunini ngimile? (Ke neng ke ho emetse?)
LERATO tries a smile but fails. SIPHO notices.
SIPHO
What’s wrong? Did something happen?
LERATO
No but we need to talk. I’ve been trying to avoid doing this but… it’s no use.
SIPHO
(Concerned) What is it?
LERATO
(hesitant)
I heard your phone conversation with Nomsa this morning.
Sipho is thrown.
SIPHO
You can’t be serious?
LERATO
(She looks him in the eye for the first time.)
Sipho, You slept with her. What more is there to say?
SIPHO
I can explain…
LERATO
What is there to explain? You made your choice.
SIPHO
It was… it just was…
LERATO
… And I am okay. I just won’t be able to continue
SIPHO
Love, you can’t do that to me. You know how much I love you…
LERATO
Accept it Sipho, it’s over…I can’t stay here with you anymore.
SIPHO
What will I be without you? (beat) You can’t go…
LERATO
I am not good at multi-tasking. I don’t want to be watching you each time, wondering what you are up to. It’s not my style.
SIPHO
(firm)
No…I can’t let you walk out of my life, LERATO, I’ve just found you
LERATO
(sadly)
It’s not going to work SIPHO… … believe me.
SIPHO
LERATO, I’m not letting you go. As a matter of fact-
(bit sheepish)
I plan to marry you.
LERATO’s face lights she is sceptical.
LERATO
Don’t joke like that…
SIPHO
(laughing)
LERATO… am I a man who makes jokes?
LERATO
(serious)
This is my heart we are talking about.
SIPHO
I know, and I have just the right medicine for your heart.
LERATO
We have just met. These things take time..
SIPHO
How long should it take for me to know that you are the right one?
LERATO
We hardly know each other
SIPHO
All I know is that I love you, and that’s enough for me.
She looks at him, for a moment it’s as if she will say yes. Sipho is hopeful.
LERATO
My heart is no longer there
SIPHO
Your heart belongs to me
LERATO
You gave your heart to Nomsa when you slept with her
SIPHO
It was just a fling… you are who I love
LERATO
You need to learn to appreciate what you have, when you still have it… Goodbye Sipho…
She leaves, and he is left rooted to the same spot
