163 Civic Boulevard, opposite the Metro Centre (formerly Loveday Street). Best for Uber drop-offs.

From JHB North & Pretoria
  1. Take the N1 highway south towards Johannesburg city.
  2. The N1 becomes the M1 (Ben Schoeman), still heading south into the city.
  3. Take the Jan Smuts off-ramp; keep in the left lane but continue straight on Jan Smuts.
  4. Cross over Empire Road (major intersection).
  5. Go up the hill, crossing Ameshoff (Wits on your right).
  6. At the next robot, turn left into Jorissen Street and carry on through several robots.
  7. Then follow the final approach below.
From JHB South
  1. Take the M1 highway north towards Johannesburg city.
  2. Take the Jan Smuts off-ramp.
  3. At the top of the off-ramp turn right and keep in the middle lane.
  4. Under the bridge, move to the left lane but continue straight on Jan Smuts.
  5. Cross over Empire Road (major intersection).
  6. Go up the hill, crossing Ameshoff (Wits on your right).
  7. At the next robot, turn left into Jorissen Street and carry on through several robots.
  8. Then follow the final approach below.
From the East Rand
  1. Take the M2 west towards Roodepoort.
  2. At the M1 / M2 split, take the M1 north (Sandton).
  3. Take the Jan Smuts off-ramp; at the robots at the top, turn south onto Jan Smuts.
  4. Keep in the left lane but continue straight on Jan Smuts.
  5. Cross over Empire Road (major intersection).
  6. Go up the hill, crossing Ameshoff (Wits on your right).
  7. At the next robot, turn left into Jorissen Street and carry on through several robots.
  8. Then follow the final approach below.

▸ EVENINGS, WEEKENDS & PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

At Simmonds Street, turn left into the theatre’s parking garage (corner of Simmonds & Stiemens).

▸ DAYTIME, MON–FRI (parking extremely limited)

Stay on Jorissen until the road splits (Loveday Street). Take the left split, travel ~30 m, then turn left at the pedestrian robot into the main entrance, down the ramp and park there.

On your way out

Leaving the theatre

Both routes start the same way out of the parking garage, then differ at Empire Road.

Travelling North (towards Pretoria)
  1. Leaving the garage (cnr Simmonds & Stiemens), turn left into Simmonds.
  2. At the next robots, turn left into Jorissen.
  3. The road splits — take the left into Loveday.
  4. It splits again — take the left into Hoofd.
  5. At the stop street, turn right into Melle.
  6. At the next stop street, turn left into Empire.
  7. At the robots, turn right onto Jan Smuts and get into the extreme left lane — this becomes the highway on-ramp.
  8. You’re now on the M1 north towards Pretoria.
Travelling South
  1. Leaving the garage (cnr Simmonds & Stiemens), turn left into Simmonds.
  2. At the next robots, turn left into Jorissen.
  3. The road splits — take the left into Loveday.
  4. It splits again — take the left into Hoofd.
  5. At the stop street, turn right into Melle.
  6. At the next stop street, turn left into Empire.
  7. Go straight through the robots at the Jan Smuts & Empire intersection.
  8. At the next set of robots, turn right — this becomes the highway on-ramp.
  9. You’re now on the M1 heading south.
Parking

Secure underground parking

No parking fee at present
Weeknights 5pm–3am · Sat, Sun & public holidays 7am–3am.
Accessed at the corner of Stiemens & Simmonds Streets, signposted from all directions.
Direct access to the theatre by elevators and escalators.
Daytime Mon–Fri is extremely limited — the parkade isn’t available before 5pm on weekdays. Our on-duty security team will assist however they can.
Security

Looked after, 24/7

Joburg Theatre runs its own round-the-clock security team, headed by three Security Managers and three Security Supervisors.

The whole building — inside and out, together with the parkade — is patrolled regularly.
